First, once again, I was unable to send messages to Ontbirds while using a hotel wifi so this report is late.
Last Wednesday and Thursday there were upwards of 500 Boneparte's Gulls along with several dozen displaying Common and Red-breasted Mergansers feeding on schools of some kind of minnow along the docks at Erieau. The fish were so abundant that a diving gull sometimes brought up three of them at a time. Pie-billed Grebe and Bufflehead were also present. The gulls and mergansers moved around the docks according to the location of the schools of fish. On Thursday I watched and photographed a feeding frenzy from 4 pm to 7 pm. Every once in awhile a Bald Eagle would fly around and all the birds would fly off and come back 5-10 minutes later. Check along the lake side of the peninsula for Canvas-backs, Red-headed Ducks, Scaup, Pie-billed Grebes and mergansers. Erieau may be reached by exiting the 401 at #81, drive south to Hwy 3, East on Hwy 3 to Erieau Rd. Drive through Erieau to the docks.
