A quick visit to Luther Marsh today was some-what successful. Although the majority of the marsh and lake is still frozen, areas close to land and running streams provided open water. Large quantities of Canada Geese dominated, however several Common Mergansers and Common Goldeneyes were noted, along with two pairs of Trumpeter Swans (un-tagged).
The highlight of the afternoon was one rather large mature Bald Eagle sitting on the ice trying to avoid harrassing Crows! There was certainly no shortage of Red Wing Blackbirds, Robins, or Grackles. One Northern Shrike ( I managed several good photos) was observed sitting on a cedar tree. Included in todays tour, were two Northern Harriers, a Merlin, A Kestrel, and several Red-tailed Hawks. A bright sunny day made for a pleasant few hours! Luther Marsh is quite extensive and is located north of Hwy9, and south of Hwy 89, with Grand Valley/Orangeville to the east, and Arthur/Mount Forest to the west. Looking forward to my next visit when all the ice is gone!
