Ontbirders
Yesterday Kevin McLaughlin, Rob Waldhuber and I went to Pelee in search of
the Spotted Towhee. Arriving at the 42 N sign we were dismayed to find it
looking like the surface of the moon. A westerly gale was blowing off L.
Erie and we waded through knee-deep snow for an hour not seeing a single
bird.
However, we walked north to the sparrow field (forest) and there found it
feeding on berries high in the trees. It moved off to the north with a group
of other birds.
We considered ourselves very lucky to have found it quite some distance away
from the known spot. We did not know how lucky we were until, stopping at the
nature centre, we learned from Sarah Rupert that the park had been closed
for the four previous days on account of a deer cull.
We could just as easily gone down the day before and been turned back at the
gate. Moral of the story: check before you go to Pelee to make sure that it
is open.
