At 8:15 am, Wednesday January 28, 2009 this is Chris Lewis reporting.

Northern owls were subjects of much attention again this week. Snowy Owl
sightings came from Fernbank Rd. on the 20th, Kinburn Side Rd. and Galetta
Side Rd. on the 21st, and near Casselman on the 24th. The Northern Hawk Owl
at Grandview & Hastings Rds. was still present as of the 27th and another
was spotted at March Rd. and Upper Dwyer Hill Rd. on the 25th. Several Great
Gray Owls have appeared in the Dunrobin area in the vicinity of Thomas Dolan
Parkway, Greenland Rd. and Vances Side Rd. and single birds were reported
from a ski trail east of Ottawa on the 20th and Ch. Valiquette in Gatineau,
Quebec on the 23rd. A newcomer on the 26th was a Boreal Owl along March
Valley Rd.; it was still here at dusk on the 27th.

Both the male and female Barrow's Goldeneye were seen again on the Rideau
River between the Hurdman bridge and the Rideau Tennis Club on the 24th.
Five Gray Partridge continue to play hide and seek on Maple Grove Rd. - they
were last reported on the 22nd but many tracks in the snow near the Ottawa
equipment depot indicate that they are settled in to this location. The most
recent report of the Black-backed Woodpecker in Poland (west of Lanark) was
on the 26th, and the Varied Thrush near Watson's Corners (also west of
Lanark) was still around as of the 27th. Twenty-one American Robins were a
nice sight for winter-weary eyes in the Shirley's Bay area on the 23rd and
small flocks of Bohemian Waxwings were seen in the same general area on the
21st and 27th.

Pine Grosbeaks have so far been reported in very small numbers, however on
the 21st at least 200 were seen in the Carp, Kinburn and Dunrobin areas.
White-winged Crossbills, Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls continue to be
widespread in varying numbers, and once again the only report of Evening
Grosbeaks came from the feeders in Poland on the 26th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
