Happy New Year Onbirders
My apologies for the late report, but I have just got home to my
computer. This morning a group of us did some New Year's birding in
Durham. At about 9:30 we arrived at Lynde Shores Conservation Area to
find a flock of Common Redpolls feeding beside the parking lot. We
observed them for about 10 minutes with great scope views. We were
able to distinguish 1 Hoary Redpoll from the bunch. In the woodlot we
found White-throated Sparrow, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Red-winged
Blackbirds along with the usual winter residents.
On Hall's Road (Cranberry Marsh) we saw several flocks of White-winged
Crossbills along the roadside, probably at least 200 birds total.
From other birders we heard reports of Snow Goose (recent, but I am
not sure if was seen today), Cackling Goose and Northern Pintail at
Pringle Creek. I had to cut the day short, so I am not sure if the
remainder of my group were able to relocate these birds.
Directions:
Halls Road/Cranberry Marsh is south off of Victoria Street, east of
Lake Ridge Road in Whitby. From the 401 exit at Salem Road go south to
Victoria (Bayley) and go east past Lake Ridge Road.
Lynde Shores Conservation area is on Victoria Street just east of
Hall's Road. (paid parking $2 all day)
To get to Pringle Creek go south on Brock STREET in Whitby from the
401 past Victoria St. There is a bridge where Pringle Creek crossed
under the road. Brock Street is east of Hall's Road and Lynde Shores.
