The Hawk Owl was present about noon today, January 1, 2009, as close as it
could get to the intersection of Regional Highways 36 and 507 (Flynns Corner,
north of Buckhorn). It was in a tree opposite the gas station. We started our
trip at a feeder north of Fenelon Falls, near the intersection of highways 121
and 37, where a Red-bellied Woodpecker has been present since November. We did
not see this bird today but others did. Other good birds we saw en route were:
small flocks of Pine Grosbeaks at feeders and on roadways; a few Common
Redpolls; hundreds of Pine Siskins; 2 Golden Crowned Kinglets; Gray Jays along
Bury's Green road; a dark phase Rough-legged Hawk; a Sharp-shinned Hawk and 92
Snow Buntings at my feeder. No Northern Shrikes.
I can send details about the directions to some of these birds upon request.
