At 3:30 pm, Monday November 17, 2008 this is Chris Lewis reporting.
SNOWY OWLS dominated local bird reports this past week. Individuals were
seen in several locations in the west end of Ottawa as well as east of the
city.
Concerns have been expressed regarding stressing these birds and it
recommended that they not be approached or disturbed.
Back on the 8th, a large flock of close to 10,000 Snow Geese was seen at
the junction of Hwy's 417 and 138 and a group of 9 was at Eagleson Rd.
near Brownlee Rd. on the 16th. A single Brant was still on the lawn along
the Ottawa River Parkway on the 11th, and apart from the dabbling and diving
duck species that have been around for several weeks, the only exceptional
reports were of a male CANVASBACK and 2 Redhead on the Ottawa River at
Deschenes, Quebec on the 12th.
Wild Turkeys have been noted in several locations over the past week, and
the 69 Sandhill Cranes reported from the fields at Milton and Smith Rds.
southwest of Navan on the 9th were seen again on the 10th; 12 were seen here
on the 15th.
Ottawa's 2nd PURPLE SANDPIPER of the season was found resting on the rock
jetty near the lighthouse at Dick Bell Park on the 11th. Six Lesser
Black-backed Gulls were found in the vicinity of the Trail Rd. Landfill the
same day, and single Iceland and Glaucous Gulls were spotted among groups of
gulls in Kanata as well as on the Ottawa River at Andrew Haydon Park. Three
Short-eared Owls continue to be seen regularly at or shortly after dusk
south
of the Ottawa International Airport.
Not much excitement in the passerine department - four late-ish Red-winged
Blackbirds were seen in the Shirley's Bay area on the 16th and a Pine
Grosbeak
was noted in the same area on the 11th.
Thank you - Good Birding!
