This morning at about 8 a male Red-bellied Woodpecker visited our
backyard feeders. It first pushed a couple of Red-winged Blackbirds off
the roof of a silo feeder. A couple of minutes later it was eating from
a hanging raw peanut feeder. ID was unmistakable: pinkish-red "cowl"
on head and neck, and horizontal stripes on back.
Since Chris Ellingwood's Kawartha Lakes checklist lists this bird as
"very rare" I will post again if it returns.
We are at 14 Richmond Street West in the hamlet of Victoria Road. From
Kirkfield, take highway 48 east, over the Trent-Severn canal, and turn
left (north) onto Kawartha Lakes 35. In about 1.5 km. at the top of the
hill turn left (west) onto Richmond Street . Phone 705-438-1301 for
updates.
Good birding!
