Highlights of reports received October 30 through November 5 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include SABINE'S GULL, NORTHERN SHRIKE,
SWALLOWS, PINE SISKINS and WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS.
The SABINE'S GULL on the Niagara River in Buffalo was still present
on November 2, at Squaw Island Park, off Niagara Street in the Black
Rock neighborhood of Buffalo.
October 30, the season's first report of NORTHERN SHRIKE, on Lewis
Road near Cook Road in the Chautauqua County Town of Charlotte, with
39 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS in the snow covered field, a flyover COMMON
RAVEN, and a VESPER SPARROW on the side of Lewis Road.
November is the time when CAVE SWALLOWS may be found along the Lake
Ontario shore. November 3, 23 distant SWALLOWS, probably CAVE SWALLOWS
but possibly CLIFF SWALLOWS, were seen over the lake in the Town of
Wilson.
PINE SISKIN movement continues along Lake Ontario and into the
region. November 2, 250 PINE SISKINS passing Dietz Road in the Town of
Porter. In Chautauqua County, 50 PINE SISKINS on Housington Road in
Charlotte. In North Tonawanda, 30 SISKINS,
and small flocks and single PINE SISKINS at feeders in Buffalo
this week.
WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS have also been in the Lake Ontario Plains - 8 at
Greenwood Cemetery in Wilson, and 5 WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS passing Four
Mile Creek State Park in Porter. Also, 3 COMMON REDPOLLS feeding on
Dietz Road.
Recent waterfowl at Dunkirk Harbor included 2 BRANT, 2 WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS, BLACK SCOTER and 44 HOODED MERGANSERS.
In Cattaraugus County, at the Countryside Gravel Ponds in Dayton,
AMERICAN WIGEON, 75 HOODED MERGANSERS, 112 COMMON MERGANSERS, 15
RED-BR. MERGANSERS, 89 RUDDY DUCKS, 6 PIED-
BILLED GREBES and 17 AMERICAN COOTS, plus two each of AMERICAN
KESTREL and BALD EAGLE.
At the Silver Creek upper reservoir in Chautauqua County, 5 SNOW
GEESE and 157 RING-NECKED DUCKS. And, at the Van Buren Road ponds in
Pomfret, 56 BUFFLEHEADS.
Also this week, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS on the North Grand Island Bridge
lamp poles.
