Weather:
A bit of cloud early in the day made way for a mostly sunny day by late
morning. A bit of high cloud made for a nice hawk watching background.
Winds were light northwest early becoming light to moderate north-northeast
by midday and northeast by mid afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
Conditions overall were ideal for migration today and after a start with no
birds for the first couple of hours of the watch, there was a steady
movement seen thereafter until the early evening. A number of species had
their best showings of the season thus far: Red-tails, Rough-legs but most
notably Golden Eagles. In fact todays flight rates in the top handful of
days for this species since the beginning of the count and certainly the
best that this hawk watcher has experienced. Particularly between 2-4 pm
there were small groups of 2 or 3 Goldens coming past the watch every few
minutes it seemed. Spectacular! A Short-eared Owl rounded out the sightings
nicely on what was a truly enjoyable day at the hawk watch.
Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptor highlights included about 200 Tundra Swans (one small group
holding a single Snow Goose), 100+ Dunlin, 8 Lapland Longspurs, 1500+ Rusty
Blackbirds and 2 Monarchs.
