At 5:30 pm, Monday October 27, 2008 this is Chris Lewis reporting.

Another great week for birding, with lots of variety to report from the past
week.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE found on the Ottawa River at the east end of
Andrew Haydon Park on the 18th was seen here again on the 26th. A ROSS'S
GOOSE was in a field northeast of Alfred on the 24th. Back on the 21st a
flock of approx. 2000 Snow Geese were at Hwy 417 and 138 east of Casselman,
and a group of 11 CACKLING GEESE was seen from the east end of Andrew Haydon
on the 26th. An adult TUNDRA SWAN showed up at Shirley's Bay northwest of
the causeway on the 23rd and though there have been no reports of the 2
juvenile TUNDRA SWANS on the Quebec side opposite Petrie Island since the
21st they may well still be around. A late male EURASIAN WIGEON has
evidently been present at Baie Noire on the Quebec side for over a week and
was still here as of at least the 25th, and a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was
seen at Deschenes, Quebec on the 26th. All three species of scoters were
reported again from quite an array of locations including some local ponds
as well as on the river. Common Goldeneye numbers are starting to build up,
and a good number of Red-breasted Mergansers were noted with 21 females seen
from Andrew Haydon Park through to Shirley's Bay, also on the 26th. A total
of 6 Red-throated Loons were spotted from Britannia through Dick Bell Park
on the 23rd but did not stay around. Seven Horned Grebes and a Common Loon
were spotted on Shirley's Bay, and 2 Red-necked Grebes were seen off the
west end of Andrew Haydon on the 26th. The juvenile LITTLE BLUE HERON found
on the 20th was last reported on the morning of the 21st flying east from
Petite Baie Clement towards Masson, Quebec.

An immature Bald Eagle at the Moodie Dr. quarry pond, a Red-shouldered Hawk
flying south over Qualicum Graham Park, several Rough-legged Hawks hunting
in farm fields, and a couple of reports of Golden Eagles flying south on
the both the Ontario and Quebec sides were interesting raptor sightings this
past week. Late shorebirds on the 26th were 42 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS along
Akins Rd. between Eagleson and Shea Rds., 2 of the same still at the quarry
pond on Giroux Rd., a Semipalmated Plover at Eagleson and Fernbank Rds., and
a juvenile LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER at the Moodie Dr. pond. A few Greater
Yellowlegs and Pectoral Sandpipers are still around and it will soon be
getting late for them as well. A Bonaparte's Gull flying over Andrew Haydon
Park on the 26th was also on the late side. Ottawa's first Snowy Owl of the
season showed up south of the airport on the 25th and was seen being chased
by a couple of Short-eared Owls the following evening. A Snowy near the
Moodie Dr. quarry pond on the 26th was last seen flying west.

Passerine reports from the 26th included a Northern Shrike at Luskville,
Quebec, a handful of Yellow-rumped Warblers and Fox Sparrows in various
locations, 6 LAPLAND LONGSPURS along Brownlee Rd. south of Akins Rd.,
scattered flocks of Horned Larks, American Pipits and Snow Buntings in many
areas, 2 Eastern Meadowlarks along Earl Armstrong Rd. and a couple each
of Rusty Blackbirds and Evening Grosbeaks, the former at the Bill Mason
Centre in Dunrobin on the 23rd, and the latter at Deschenes on the 26th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
