Today (10-4-08) I re-found the bird at "Jaeger Rocks". Originally found
it last Sunday just east of the old amusement park called "Erie Beach"
in Ft. Erie, Ontario. Spoke w/Willie D'Anna earlier this evening & he is
of the opinion that it more than likely is indeed a juv. Curlew
(originally I had doubts...but was encouraged after reading Willie's
e-mail). What bothers me is I thought I read on Ont or Genbirds fairly
recently that occasional Dunlins have white rumps - comments on this
greatly appreciated!! Anyway the bird was w/2 Dunlins, ~ 10 Killdeer
(which were bothersome alarmists), 1 White Rump (which initially caused
some confusion but always or almost always stayed at the point), & later
1 Sanderling & later still 2 Greater Yellowlegs. Scoped at fairly close
range from ~2:30 - 6:30 in excellent light.
Description -
Body was a bit larger than the Dunlins w/the black bill being a bit more
curved throughout half or most of its length (at one point though this
did not seem so). Bill also seemed finer tipped. Black legs mostly
seemed or were longer in the tibia (upper leg) but maybe not in tarsus
(lower leg). At one point thought feet extended beyond tail tip on
flying bird (flight angles/closeness never good). Upper wing stripe.
Wide white or off-white supercillium. White rump (flying & resting
views). Scaly back & wings w/black "anchors" on scapulars (~ like 3rd
ed. Geographic Guide). Breast resembled Geo Guide much more than Sibley
- & more grayish than buff. Auriculars light brown. Wing tips extended
beyond tail tip (not reaching tail tip in Dunlin). May've preferred
water feeding a bit more than Dunlins.
Directions from Peace Bridge (just your original birth certificate or
photocopy & photo ID is all you need coming back into US - Canadian
Customs is more easy going) -
Go south on Central Ave. to end & turn right (SW) on Lake Shore. Go past
the historic old Ft. Erie on your right. Where road curves right you'll
notice rocky shoreline on left. This is called Jaeger Rocks. Notice the
nice point up a piece (referred to above). Since parking is a little
tight along here consider parking on one of the side streets - Albert...
Or go to end of Lake Shore (makes a 90 degree turn to right & becomes
Bardol Ave.) & park in the wide street of the housing development & walk
back to Jaeger Rocks (this is where the old - 1920s, 30s amusement park
called Erie Beach was). The woods can be good for warblers...
Directions from QEW -
Exit at Thompson Rd. & go south to Garrison Rd. were Thomson becomes
Helena. Continue south on Helena to Dominion & turn left (towards NE).
Go ~1km & turn right on Albert to Lake Shore (& see above).
