Hello All, The "Mystery Sparrow" seen at Algonquin Park yesterday (Sept. 21) is now generally accepted as a LE CONTE'S SPARROW. These are annual in the long grass at the Lake of Two Rivers end of the Old Airfield. This one was a bit early, but this is typically when their migration begins (peaks from Sept. 25 to Oct. 9, continues to at most to Oct. 20). They don't flush easily, so patience is needed to see one. SAVANNAH and SONG SPARROWS were also present.
Also, watch for Nelson's Sharp-Tailed Sparrow in the sedge marsh at the Two Rivers end of the Airfield, they should get moving soon and most sightings occur in Algonquin during the first ten days of October, chest waders are recommended if you are serious about finding any. Directions: Algonquin Park is three hours north of Toronto, via Highways 400, 11 and 60. Follow the signs, which start in Toronto on Highway 400. The Old Airfield can be accessed by taking the Mew Lake Campground road and parking at the lot just past the firewood area. The Lake of Two Rivers end is on the left. (You will see the lake, the marsh is a bit harder to see from far away) Photographs: http://www.flickr.com/photos/levfrid/2875715243/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/levfrid/2875708487/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/levfrid/2876534256/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/levfrid/2875711921/ Good Birding, Lev Frid _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
