Early this afternoon I found a first fall Yellow-crowned Night-Heron foraging
in a small marshy area east of the Ganatchio Trail in the Little River area of
east Windsor. The bird is cooperative and can be approached, so you can study
it well in your binoculars without needing a scope. This is something like
species number 220 for me in this gem of a site within Windsor's city limits.
To relocate this bird, find your way to the Little River Road entrance to the
site and park in the lot near the toboggan hill. Find the paved Ganatchio Trail
and follow it to the north for about 5 minutes, until you reach a little rise.
To your left will be another paved trail, and to your right you will see a
gravelly path that will take you east to the first of three very large ponds
the city has excavated. The marshy area is just a short distance from the paved
trail on your right, before you reach the huge pond. I had a Virginia Rail in
there also about 10 days ago, and there are about 8 Wood Ducks there now.
Every wet area at this site appears to be teeming with frogs, so perhaps this
bird might linger. Good luck if you chase it.
