As of this evening the Red-necked Grebe nest in Bronte Marsh is abandoned
with two eggs unhatched out of four eggs originally present. After my post
on Saturday morning of one egg having hatched I returned in the evening to
see that there were two chicks and two eggs in the nest. On Sunday I only
saw one chick but did spend much time at it on account of the rain. This
morning grebes were audible as I was getting ready for work. This evening
the nest was empty and there were no grebes in the pond or adjacent creek.
Sue and I searched the harbour but could not find any young grebes. The two
nests on floating tires are also abandoned now without having any young
fledged. If anyone finds any grebe chicks in Bronte please post or let me
know.
We did find a female Merlin perched in the "usual" spruce tree with a dead
top in the harbour area and a Bonaparte's Gull on the lake.
Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte Rd. (Oakville) and go towards the lake.
The harbour is at the end of Bronte Rd. The marsh is just north of Lakeshore
Rd. on the west side of Bronte creek.
