Migration seems to have come to a halt at Point Pelee. The only new species observed by this reporter over the week, although I am sure they have been around for awhile, were Bank and Cliff Swallows.
The shorebirds have finally left Hillman Marsh. While a Baird's Sandpiper was reported on June 10th by Mike Burrell, a walk around the shorebird impoundment this evening indicated only a few of the resident Killdeer left. There is still a reasonable population of Bonaparte's Gull, Forster's Tern, Common Tern and the usual dabbling ducks in the remaining water at the east end of the impoundment. A female Northern Harrier was hunting over the corn stubble in the field to the west of Hillman Marsh on June 6th and a number of Song and Savannah Sparrows were in full voice in the small tree plantation to the west of the impoundment during each visit. For those intending to access Hillman Marsh or Point Pelee from the Wheatley side be aware that the bridge over the Sturgeon Creek at County Road 37 is now closed for repair. Access to Hillman Marsh is still available from the west through Leamington on either Seacliff Drive or Oak Street. Submitted by Todd Pepper on behalf of the Friends of Point Pelee.
