Hello Ontbirders This morning a breeding-plumaged male Red-breasted Merganser was just a few metres from shore on the Ottawa River just west of the Remic Rapids parking lot.
Directions: The Remic Rapids parking lot is on the north side of the Ottawa River Parkway. The access road to the lot is the first turn-off after Parkdale when going west on the parkway. Park at the far (west) end of the Remic lot and proceed on foot a few hundred metres west along the bike path. On your left (south) you'll see an underpass that leads to Carleton Ave (signed). This is the area of the river where I saw the merganser. A bit further west there are barricades where the bike path is slightly flooded.
