THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 8:30 pm, MARCH 23, 2008

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

As the seasons continue to duke it out weather-wise, a few local firsts of
the year were reported on the first "official" day of spring. On the 20th a
Great Blue Heron flew over Richmond at Rushmore Rd., single Turkey
Vultures were seen over the Ottawa River at Tunney's Pasture as well as
the Trail Rd. landfill and Laverendrye Blvd. in Gatineau, and the first
report of a Common Grackle was on the 19th at a feeder on McGillivray
St. near the Rideau Canal. Subsequent reports of all 3 species came in
from other locations over the Easter weekend as well.

The GRAY PARTRIDGES in Kanata were most recently seen near the utility
buildings at #1655 Maple Grove Rd. on the 23rd and they are now
beginning to pair off. Large groups of Bohemian Waxwings numbering
up to 300 birds per flock were again noted in many locations during the
past several days and are being joined by increasing numbers of Cedar
Waxwings. Other noteworthy birds seen in our area included 2 adult
Bald Eagles as well as 1 Iceland and 6 Glaucous Gulls at the Deschenes
and Remic rapids of the Ottawa River on the 20th, and a Northern Shrike
was singing at March Valley Rd. on the 23rd.

Thank you - Good Birding!
