THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 9:00 am, MONDAY FEBRUARY 25, 2008
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
A nice mix of the new and the "deja-vu" this past week....
The discovery of a TUFTED TITMOUSE in Constance Bay on the 23rd would have
created some excitement if it weren't for the one that has already
spent the entire
winter in Forest Park (Embrun). Another interesting discovery was a
male AMERICAN
THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 24th, in virtually the same location
where a female
was found back on January 13th, along the Eardley-Masham Rd. north of Ramsay
Lake in Gatineau Park. Also observed in the area of the Eardley
escarpment were up
to 6 adult Bald Eagles, an adult Golden Eagle, 3 Northern Shrikes and
a small number
of Pine and Evening Grosbeaks.
The most recent report of the female Harlequin Duck on the Ottawa River at the
north end of the Champlain bridge was on the 24th. A covey of up to 12 GRAY
PARTRIDGE was seen from the 20th to the 24th in the parking lots of
the Bell Sensplex
arena and the Ottawa Hydro building along Maple Grove Rd. in Kanata. Farther
west along Maple Grove near Huntmar Dr., a flock of approx. 30 Horned Larks was
noted.
The wintering Red-shouldered Hawk is still present at Old Carp Rd.,
Huntmar Dr. and
Gourlay Lane as of the 24th, and another of this species was reported
from Prom.
Lakeview in Aylmer, Quebec on the 19th - this is the very same
location where a
Red-shouldered spent the month of February last year. Ring-billed
Gulls are starting to
return - 6 were seen on the river at Remic rapids along with an adult Lesser
Black-backed Gull on the 24th. The Hermit Thrush at the feeders near
the Hurdman bridge
by the Rideau River is evidently still looking quite fit as of the
23rd, and yet another
Hermit Thrush is apparently holding on for the season - a bird seen feeding on
buckthorn berries on the Quebec side below the Deschenes rapids from
the 19th to
the 21st was reported from this location back on January 25th.
Two American Robins were in the Britannia woods on the 21st along with a mixed
flock of both Bohemian and Cedar Waxwings, a flock of 10 or more BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRDS was noted visiting feeders along Russell Rd. in Carlsbad
Springs on the
23rd, and a feeder in Constance Bay continues to host many Common Redpolls as
well as 1 "Greater" and up to 3 HOARY REDPOLLS.
Thank you - Good Birding!
