Things are moving around a bit in the area and a variety of birds are
turning up here and there. Some of the old standbys are still around. A
hopping spot to be this week is still 10th Road East in Saltfleet. The
NORTHERN HAWK OWL is still being seen regularly and to add to the excitement
a HOARY REDPOLL is coming into a feeder just south of Ridge Road on the west
side with a group of Common Redpolls. A Short-eared Owl was seen near the
model airplane field along with a flock of American Robins. A Northern
Harrier was seen cruising the field south of the tracks on Tuesday. Along
the road, a female pheasant was spotted near the tracks and on Green
Mountain and 8th Road East a sizable flock of Wild Turkeys are being seen
regularly.

Down at LaSalle Marina at the end of Waterdown Road, Wood Duck, Green-winged
Teal, several Wigeon, Tundra Swan and two Brown Creepers were reported in
the week. On the ice last Saturday a rare look at a Short-eared Owl sitting
on the ice about half way out the bay. The number of Bald Eagles seems to
be picking up and this spot is an excellent vantage point to see them from.

Out in Flamborough this week, a flock of Bohemian Waxwings numbering about
20 was seen on Tuesday. The next day a flock of 100 were seen at the same
spot which is on Middletown Road just south of 5th concession on Wednesday.
They are fairly sporadic and some have been successful at seeing them while
others have dipped. Also in the area was a large group of Snow Buntings,
two Common Ravens and the rufous morph Red-tailed Hawk. On 4th Concession
just west of Brock Road yesterday, a sizable flock of Cedar Waxwings were
seen along with a number of American Robins mixed in. Common Redpolls are
still being reported in the area at feeders. Up toward 8th Concession and
Westover Road, there have been sporadic appearances of Red-shouldered Hawk.
Another spot reporting Red-shoulder was Campbellville Road just west of
Twiss where an overwintering bird was seen last Saturday. Still another one
has been reported from the Battlefield Park/Stoney Creek Ballpark area so if
you're lucky and winter listing there are a few around.

Down at the Valley Inn, White-throated, White-crowned and Song Sparrows are
coming into the feed. A few Brown-headed Cowbirds showed up this week and a
female Wood Duck landed in the only open patch of water near the iron
bridge.

In the odds and sods, Pine Siskins were reported from the Brantford area and
from the Hamilton Conservation Authority Workshed on Mineral Springs Road.
The Peregrine Falcons are still keeping watch over the lift bridge. A
Rough-legged Hawk was seen near Hagersville last week (not too many of these
around!). There is still reports of a Barred Owl in the Hilton Falls area
but its range seems to be wide and reports sporadic, keep tuned in. A
Yellow-rumped Warbler is coming into a suet feeder along the pipeline at
Shell Park in Oakville. The Horned Grebe and three Pied-billed Grebes are
still present in the Desjardins Canal for those looking to add to their
winter lists at the 11th hour.

That's the news for the week. Keep sending those sightings in! Happy
winter birding for the last push of February.

Good birding,
Cheryl Edgecombe
