THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 8:00 pm, FEBRUARY 18, 2008

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

The lean times of February continue, but there have been a few reports of
local interest. On the Ottawa River, a female HARLEQUIN DUCK was still
present as of the 16th, and a female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was most
recently reported on the 13th; both birds were seen between Bate Island
and the north end of the Champlain bridge. Three Bufflehead were also in
the Deschenes rapids on the 13th, and a Merlin flew over this location the
same day. The wintering RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen again along
Old Carp Rd. between Huntmar Rd. and Gourlay Lane on the 16th, and
another Merlin was seen a few times during the past week in Carlington
Heights - one of the several urban neighbourhoods in which this species has
nested in recent years.

A Belted Kingfisher was a nice surprise on the 16th along Flewellyn Rd. west
of Shea Rd. A couple of Northern Shrikes were seen between Richardson
Side Rd. and Old Carp Rd. on the 13th, and both the Tufted Titmouse in
Forest Park (Embrun) and the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Parkwood Hills
(Ottawa), continue their winter sojourns - the latest reports for both these
birds was the 16th.

Small groups of Bohemian Waxwings and Pine Grosbeaks are still around in
various locations, and redpolls continue to dominate the local "winter finch"
scene - a feeder in Constance Bay hosted a good number of Commons, 3
Hoarys and one "Greater" Redpoll on the 16th, and on the 17th another
west-end feeder attracted 2 Hoarys and one "Greater" among a flock of
approx. 50 - 60 Common Redpolls.

Thank you - Good Birding!
