Yesterday afternoon I was in Moose Creek on non-birding business, but I had about 45 minutes to burn, so I headed to Casselman to see if I could find some of the snowy owls I had heard were seen there. I came across two snowies, a juvenile and a female, on Concession 20 Road. According to the locals, there are between 3 and 5 snowies that are consistently seen in the area. The juvenile I saw was the same one I had seen earlier around Christmastime when I first went out there to find the snowies. The owls are relatively tame and seem more interested in scanning the fields than watching the photographers that follow them around.
DIRECTIONS TO CASSELMAN: Take 417E to exit 58 and turn left. Follow this road for about a kilometre, then turn right onto Concession 20 Road. Scan the tall electrical poles along the roadside - the snowies primarily hunt from these high lookouts. _________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
