Hi Ontbirders,
One day seems to make a difference! Today (Sunday) I was just going to do a quick check of the St. Clair River, but ended up spending hours and I only went as far north as Lambton Generating Station. I estimated about 15,000+ each of Canvasback and Redhead from Walpole Island to north of Sombra. There were various large rafts all along, but the concentration was from Fawn Island to Cundick Park north of Sombra. Yesterday there was hardly a duck to look at, at least in the morning! I suspect these all came up from Lake St. Clair. Other things of note included a male AMERICAN WIGEON at Seager Park, a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER (probably one I reported at the first of the month) at Fawn Island, an AMERICAN COOT with Redheads near the floodway outlet at Fawn Island, four LONG-TAILED DUCKS off Port Lambton. All the other usual wintering ducks were present, constituting a total of 15 species. Tundra Swans were in various spots as well. Hardly a gull on the river this winter, but I did note a definitive basic Kumlien's type ICELAND GULL riding an ice flow off Cundick Park. There has been an immature Bald Eagle around which I saw yesterday, but not today.

Directions to Sombra and St. Clair River: Find Hwy 40 that runs N/S between
Wallaceburg and Sarnia. Turn west on Lambton Rd. 2 (Bentpath Line) and take
to Sombra on the St. Clair River. Fawn Island is just to the south of the
village. The St. Clair Parkway (Rd. 33) follows the river along its length.
