Hey Birders,
Mike and I drove down to Long Point today and had a pretty good day. Overall it was really nice out with great conditions: calm, sunny and warm. We had a little over 70 species for the day. Sparrows were particularly evident. Highlights are broken down below. Timpf's farm/Walsingham 1 adult Northern Goshawk - seen flying overhead going east, quite high up 75 Cedar Waxwings 15 American Robins Hahn Marsh Yellow-headed Blackbird - 1 male seen very well, Mike was able to get some good photos of it. - from the parking lot, head west into the forest/swamp following the path maybe 50 feet, the bird was with a group of Rusty's, Red-wings, C. Grackles and Cowbirds by the edge possibly feeding at the feeder by the house along RR. 42 Port Royal 1 Northern Mockingbird - right at the bridge Big Creek 9 Pied-billed Grebes 6 adult, 2 first-winter Bald Eagle's Old Provincial Park 1 Chipping Sparrow 2 Red-bellied Woodpeckers Port Ryerse 1 Tufted Titmouse 1 Carolina Wren - nice male singing - sounded like spring! Odds and ends throughout the Long Point Area: 2 Field Sparrows 4 White-crowned Sparrows 4 Lapland Longspurs 17 Song Sparrows 7 Swamp Sparrows 1 Northern Flicker 4 Red-bellied Woodpeckers 9 Sandhill Cranes Wilby Line (Waterloo) 3 Hoary Redpoll's - 1 male, 2 female, all exilpes Directions: Hahn Marsh - heading south on Hwy. 59 turn right or west on RR 42 or Front Road, head about 10 minutes going through Port Royal and past Lee Brown's, there's a little sign "Hahn Marsh". Park in the little parkette and take the little path (you'll need rubber boots) in the west section 50 feet and look for the YHBL, it will likely be with other icterids. Timpf's Farm - Walsingham - (taken from Mat Timpf's previous email): Coming from the east on Highway 24, the highway turns into RR 60 at the intersection with Higway 59. Continue a few km down the road, and after you cross the birdge at Big Creek it's the first road (gravel) on the left. Continue down until the dip in the road where the creek crosses, and the waxwings are foraging on the berries to the west. Wilby Line - Waterloo: Heading east from Kitchener on Hwy 7/8, get off at Trussler Road/Ira G Needles Drive (I think the switched the names), head north going through 3 round'a'bouts, at the 4th round'a'bout head west on Erb Street. In St. Agatha, turn right or north on Notre Dame, take this to the first road, which is Wilby Line, the redpoll's were at the first house on your left at the crest of the hill. All other locations can be reached if you follow the lake from Long Point heading east. Email me if you want more specific directions/instructions. Good Birding, Ken Burrell Heidelberg, Ont.
