Hi All,
Bruce DiLabio, Bill Gilmour and myself headed out to Gull Island this
morning, where we met up with Anne Anthony, and saw a few birds of
note. The Ruddy Turnstone is still foraging on bare rocks, and even
standing on ice along the south and west shore of Gull Island. There
were no Purple's seen today, but they can hide under ice shelves, or
they could be out on High Bluff Island. One pipit was present on the
west end of the spit connecting Gull is. to the mainland. There was
a Savannah Sparrow in the long grass in the centre of the island -
quite a rare winter bird in these parts. There was a Horned Grebe
off the west end of Gull as well as a handful of Bonaparte's Gulls
flying around.
Directions: Presqu'ile Provincial Park is south of Brighton and is
signed from either Hwy 401 or 2. Gull Island and Owen Pt. are closed
to the public on hunting days (Mon., Wed., Fri., Sat.) The hunt ends
after this coming Saturday so there will be no more restrictions.
Cheers,
Doug
