THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 7:30 pm, SUNDAY DECEMBER 9, 2007
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
Winter has still not arrived according to the calendar, but the local
weather says otherwise,
as do those who pursue a "winter bird list". The Ottawa and Rideau
Rivers are now largely
frozen over except for the rapids and a few small leads, and
lingering water birds have
concentrated in these areas along with the usual congregations of
Common Goldeneye.
On the 7th, a few Canada Geese were at both the Deschenes and Remic
rapids, along with
one each of White-winged Scoter, Long-tailed Duck and Bufflehead. A
very late Common
Loon has been present in the vicinity of the Deschenes rapids, most
recently reported on
the 9th, and a late Double-crested Cormorant as well as a male and
female BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE were spotted here on the 5th. A male Barrow's also
continues to hang out
with a few Common Goldeneye and Common Mergansers on the Rideau River
north of the
Rideau Tennis Club.
Two separate coveys of GRAY PARTRIDGE were seen in Kanata on the 3rd
and 4th - a
group of 5 on Maple Grove Rd. off Terry Fox Drive, and a group of 9
near the parking lot of the
Home Depot store. Several reports of Bald Eagles came in from
various locations over the
past week, and an immature Golden Eagle was seen heading southwest
over Huntmar Rd.
on the 4th. Two sightings of an adult Peregrine Falcon came in on
the 5th, from the
communication tower on the Blood Donor Clinic on Carling Ave., and on
the R.H. Coats
building at Tunney's Pasture.
The evening gull roost on the Ottawa River below the Deschenes rapids
on the 5th included
at least 1 adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, 9 Iceland and 17 Glaucous
Gulls. A good number
of gulls including several of the "white-winged" species were also
seen at Remic rapids on
the 9th. The first seasonal report of a Snowy Owl was on the 6th, at
Concession 20 and
Ste-Rose Rd. east of Ottawa, and a Barred Owl was seen along Rifle
Rd. as well as March
Valley Rd. near Shirley's Bay on the 8th.
A late HERMIT THRUSH was feeding with a flock of 12 - 15 American
Robins below the east
end of the "ridge" in the Britannia Conservation Area on the 9th.
Bohemian Waxwings, Pine
Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls and Evening Grosbeaks continue to be
reported almost daily
from all over our area. Common Redpoll numbers in particular have
significantly increased,
with up to 100 birds seen along Clarence-Cambridge Rd. in the Larose
Forest on the 7th and
a large number were also at a feeder along Torbolton Ridge Rd. on the
8th. The OREGON
JUNCO continues to frequent the feeders at the Fletcher Wildlife
Garden along with regular
Dark-eyed Juncos and a White-throated Sparrow, and a rather late
Red-winged Blackbird
was at a feeder in Riverview Park on the 6th.
Thank you - Good Birding!
