The American White Pelican was present in Cootes Paradise this evening at
6:30 pm, just off the (west?) tip of Hickory Island. This is the small
island directly out from Princess Point. We had excellent views of the bird
from the Captain Cootes Trail in the RBG Arboretum, but the bird would have
been visible from Princess Point as well. The bird was slowly swimming and
feeding and eventually disappeared behind the island.
Direction:
To view from the Arboretum (from Rob Dobo's post Oct 8th):
Directions (to the RBG Arboretum): From Hwy 403 /Hwy 6 interchange, go
north on Hwy 6 and at the stop lights, turn right onto Plains Rd. Follow
this down to the lights at York Blvd/Plains Rd and turn right onto York
Blvd. Go to Old Guelph Rd, turn right, follow it down and under the Hwy 403
then up the hill. Turn left into the entrance to the RBG Arboretum
(entrance fee for non-members). Park near the Nature Centre and take the
trail behind it down to Captain Cootes Trail. Go west on this trail and
look out onto the marsh at various vantage points.
NOTE: There is an entrance fee for the garden, which will give you all day
access to all of the RBG properties. Trail maps are posted at various points
and also available for purchase inside the nature centre
Please be aware that the gates to the arboretum do not open until 10 am!
To view from Princess Point:
From the intersection of Dundurn St N and King St W, proceed West on King
and turn Right at the first lights, just after the 403 overpass (Macklin St
N). Proceed on Macklin until you reach the Princess Point parking area (RBG
parking fee from non-members, pay-and-display). Best viewing is from the
very tip; follow the trail leading from the parking lot to the tip.
Good Luck
