Highlights of reports received October 4 through October 11 from the Niagara Frontier Region include HUMMINGBIRD, PINE SISKIN, BRANT, RED-THROATED LOON and GREAT EGRETS.

October 10 and 11, from Houghton in the Allegany County Town of Caneadea, a reported RUBY-T. HUMMINGBIRD at a backyard feeder. Any HUMMINGBIRD SPECIES during October should be carefully identified. RUBY-T. HUMMINGBIRDS generally have migrated from the region in early October, while rare, out- of-range HUMMINGBIRDS tend to occur in the northeastern states during this time. More details of the observation would be appreciated.

At a feeder in the Town of Colden, October 9, the season's first report of PINE SISKIN.

October 10 on Lake Ontario at Olcott Harbor, BRANT and 2 RED-THROATED LOONS, plus 4 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 8 COMMON LOONS, 10 HORNED GREBES, PEREGRINE FALCON, 5 AMERICAN COOTS and 20 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.

A record October count on the 9th, and maybe a record fall count - 112 GREAT EGRETS at the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area. Two of the EGRETS were banded as nestlings this summer at the Motor Island heronry in the Niagara River.

Fall migrants still moving though the region. October 7 at Goat Island, above Niagara Falls - nine warbler species - ORANGE-CR. WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, BL.-THR. GREEN WARB., PINE WARBLER, PALM WARBLER and BLACKPOLL WARBLER, among a flock of over 200 YELLOW-R. WARBLERS.

ORANGE-CR. WARBLER also at Amherst State Park on the 10th, with NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW-R. WARBLER and BL.-THR. GREEN WARB., plus 6 YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKERS, EASTERN PHOEBE, BLUE- HEADED VIREO, 6 BROWN CREEPERS, 8 WINTER WRENS, GOLDEN-CR. KINGLETS, RUBY-CR. KINGLETS, 3 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, GRAY- CHEEKED THRUSH, HERMIT THRUSH, GRAY CATBIRD, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW, ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK and PURPLE FINCH.

Other reports this week - abundant WHITE-THR. SPARROWS and a few WHITE-CR. SPARROWS at several locations. At Allegany State Park, on the Wolf Run hiking loop, BALD EAGLE, 2 COMMON RAVENS and 2 singing BLUE-HEADED VIREOS. At the Park's reservoir at Wolf Run, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and KILLDEER. In Buffalo, at the Bird Island Pier, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 6 SANDERLINGS and 9 DUNLIN. And, along Route 219 in the Town of Boston, a PEREGRINE FALCON kept pace with an automobile traveling at 50 mph. Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, October 18. Please call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may report sightings after the tone. Thank you for calling and reporting to Dial-a-Bird.
