Hello Everyone
Bird activity along the Ottawa River continues to increase. Yesterday morning, September 27th, between Deschenes Rapids and Shirley's Bay there was lots of activity- highlights included 3 Brant resting along the shore off Scrivens Road, 16 American Golden Plover, flyby at Andrew Haydon Park, 30+ White-winged Scoter, 1 Surf Scoter, 1 Common Goldeneye off Dick Bell Park and at least a dozen Common Loons, 4 singles, flocks of 5 and 3, also off Andrew Haydon Park. The waterfowl numbers at Shirley's Bay included 17 Redhead, 100+ Ring-necked Duck, small flocks of both Greater and Lesser Scaup. On September 26th there were 150+ Wood Duck, 300+ Green-winged Teal, 72 American Wigeon and 17 Redhead. Also, on Sept. 26th at Deshenes Rapids there were 11 adult Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Directions: Shirley's Bay:  From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 west to the
Moodie Drive exit and turn north (right) on  Moodie Drive and continue to
Carling Ave. Turn left at Carling Ave. and follow Carling to Rifle Road.
Turn right (north) on Rifle Rd. Park at the lot at the end (boat launch).
Walk back to the road, and continue through the gate on the Department of
National Defence property. There is a trail on your right (clearly marked
with vehicle "No Entry" signs) which heads into the woods, and, eventually to the
dyke.

**** PLEASE NOTE**** YOU MUST OBTAIN PERMISSION FROM THE RANGE CONTROL OFFICE BEFORE ENTERING THE DYKE AREA-- Call (613) 991-5740 and request permission to visit the dyke area for birding.

Directions: Dick Bell Park: From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 west, turn
north on Bayshore Drive, continue to Carling Ave. Turn left (west) on
Carling Ave. Proceed along Carling Ave. and after passing watch Andrew
Haydon Park watch for Dick Bell Park on your right.
