Observers: Claude Radley, Janina Radley, Jim McCoy, Karen Padbury,
Ted Harms, Will Weber
Visitors:
On the tower today some old friends: Karen Padbury, and Will Weber. A
mother daughter team from Toronto braved the dim morning, but left before
the real traffic began. As the day improved we had visitors from Ohio, and
the Windsor area as well.
Weather:
The day began dismall. Constant rain until the 8am hour, then drizzle on
and off for the next hour. Temps began at 21.4 C and ended with 27.1 C.
As the day wore on, each hour improved. By the noon hour the sun was
breaking through. Winds were from the north all day--quiet in the morning,
and increasing as the weather improved.
Raptor Observations:
A terrible start to the day turned the corner for raptors in the noon hour
and brought out a nice mix. We had a very early Rough Leg Hawk in the 2pm
hour........Both Claude Radley and I were very surprised to see this Rough
Leg in with a group of Broad Wing Hawks. The day was great for the small
Falcons, with 139 Kestrels, and 5 Merlin. We also had a lone Male Northern
Harrier in the total of 38 that moved thru today.
Non-raptor Observations:
Once the rain stopped we had some song bird activity close to the tower in
the willow. Will Weber spotted the following warblers: Black Throated
Green, Black Burnian, Yellow Rump and Tennessee. In addition we had a nice
look at a Sora jumping from lily pad to pad hunting near the tower.
Monarchs were everywhere once the sun was out...with all the hawks in the
air we couldn't keep an accurate count on the Monarchs...log sheets reflect
100...probably 3 times that were seen.
