Hi all,
It was an excellent day for birding and butterflying in the Rondeau area Saturday. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was at Blenheim Lagoons later this afternoon in pond 5 amongst the weeds. It was hard to find, but I saw it after some diligent searching and my second visit to the lagoons today! There were quite a few other shorebirds present including 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 5 STILT SANDPIPERS, 4 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, ~ 10 Short-billed Dowitchers, 2 Semipalmated Plovers, and many Semipalmated Sandpipers, Least Sandpipers, Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs. (The Marbled Godwit was seen only on Sept.1).

At Rondeau Park, a good fallout of warblers came this morning. Most notable were the sheer numbers of Blackpoll Warblers, as there were essentially hundreds of them in the park. Some single trees had 8-10 at a time! There were large numbers of thrushes (both Gray-cheeked and Swainson's) at first light this morning on Rondeau Road.

There were butterflies to look at as well. Fiery Skippers were at both Rondeau Park (marsh trail entrance) and at Blenheim Lagoons. Buckeyes (plentiful this year) were around as well.

Lagoon Directions: Exit 401 at #90 (Communications Rd.) and head into
Blenheim. At the main stoplight turn right (west) onto Rd. 3. Travel about
1.5 km and turn right (north) onto Lagoon Rd. at the carwash, and continue
north about 1 km to gate. You must have an annual permit to enter.
Available at the Municipal Service Centre, 35 Talbot St. in Blenheim,
during business hours, fax (519) 676-0244.
