Hello everyone,

Today, September 2nd, I birded Presqu'ile Provincial Park. Overall, land bird migration was slow, but the shorebird activity at Owen Point and Gull Island was very good. Highlights were 3 Whimbrel, 1 Buff-breasted Sandpiper, and 7 Baird's Sandpiper.

While at Owen Point, I watched as a juvenile Merlin tried to catch a Semipalmated Plover. The plover resorted to landing on the water and diving beneath the surface while the Merlin made several attempts to catch it. The plover's strategy paid off and it survived the ordeal, but just barely. The plover eventually drifted to shore and hid in the vegetation to dry out and recover.

                                               good birding, Bruce

Directions: To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, take exit #509 off Hwy.401
and go south to Brighton and follow the signs to the park. Locations within
the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that is normally
available at the Park gate.
