THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 6:00 pm, MONDAY AUGUST 7, 2007

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Not a lot of change yet on the local birding scene, but a few more species
are on the move. On the 5th at the Almonte sewage lagoons there were 7
species of shorebirds in the 1st cell, including 1 Solitary and 1 Baird's
Sandpiper and 2 Wilson's Snipe. Also noted in the other ponds were
Northern Pintail, Bufflehead and a family group of Green Herons. The same
day in a field along Franktown Rd. southwest of Munster Rd. there were 6
Upland Sandpipers being buzzed by a Northern Goshawk.

The habitat along the Ottawa River at the east end of Andrew Haydon Park
and on the west side of the Shirley's Bay causeway is improving as more
mudflats are becoming exposed. Ten species of shorebirds were at the
base of the causeway on the 6th including 1 Semipalmated Plover, approx.
50 Lesser and 5 Greater Yellowlegs, 4 Solitary and several Semipalmated
Sandpipers, 6 Least and 1 Stilt Sandpiper, 1 Short-billed Dowitcher and a
Wilson's Snipe. Increasing numbers of waterfowl here included
Green-winged and Blue-winged Teal, American Wigeon and Northern
Pintail. A small group of warblers in the Shirley's Bay woods included
Nashville, Northern Parula and Black-throated Green. A juvenile Bonaparte's
Gull was at Andrew Haydon on the 6th as well.

Additionally on the 5th at the large quarry pond along Moodie Dr. south of
Trail Rd. there were half a dozen Ring-necked Ducks, 21 Ruddy Ducks and 2
Pectoral Sandpipers.

A reminder to all who visit the Shirley's Bay causeway: Please call the Range
Control office at (613) 991-5740 for permission to access this area. The
Moodie Dr. pond is in an active private sand and gravel quarry, so please
view the birds from the gate only.

Thank you - Good Birding!
