Hi Ontbirders:

  With the beautiful weather yesterday, My wife and I went hiking in the
Gatineau Park just north of Ottawa. There is a lovely trail (Lusk Lake Trail)
in the north end of the park near Lac Phillipe where you rarely meet anyone. On
the trail were several large mixed groups of passerines with five or six
species of warblers, three vireos, nuthatches (mostly red-breasted) and
chickadees.

  Among one of the goups, I heard a definite Yellow-throated Vireo singing. I
was able to track him down in the woods and had good views. This species is
rare in the Ottawa area, but is known to breed in the Gatineau Park.

  Also on the trail, were three species of woodpecker (Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker, Hairy and Downy) and a Broad-winged Hawk circling overhead. At Lusk
Lake (the end of the trail) a single Common Loon was in evidence. There are
also Bald Eagles in the area, but I did not see any.

  Good birding

  Peter Hall

  Directions:

  From Ottawa/Gatineau take Highways 5 and 105 north to Wakefield. Past the
Wakefield turnoff, turn west on the Ste. Cecile de Masham Road (Hwy 368). Past
the village, take the entrance road south into Gatineau Park. Follow past the
park entrance ($9.80 per car during the summer season). Follow to the end and
park near Lac Phillipe. On foot, follow the road into Taylor Lake. Look for the
entrance to the Lusk Lake Trail on the left, about a half kilometre down the
Taylor Lake Road.

And a slightly later report - at 10:30 this morning (July 30) it was about 50 m
north of Lookout #3, and at 11:45 it was right at Lookout #2, feeding at the
dead fish nearby.

  At Owen Point there were 3 Semipalmated Plovers and 1 Ruddy Turnstone, as
well as a Bonaparte's Gull in breeding plumage.

  Greetings all,

The Marbled Godwit found by Fred Helleiner yesterday at Presqu'ile
was still present this morning at 0800h. It was feeding on the
natural (south) beach between viewing areas 2 and 3. Very few other
shorebirds were present: Killdeer 4, Spotted S/p 4, Lesser Yellowlegs
1u, 1j, 1 ad Pectoral. There was also a female Long-tailed Duck in
close to shore off from the causeway dividing High Bluff from Pines
campground. At Owen Pt. there were a number of Yellow warblers which
might be migrants, as well as a Northern Waterthrush.

Directions: Presqu'ile is best reached by taking the Brighton exit
from Hwy. 401, then heading south into the town. From there follow
the Provincial Park signs.

Cheers,

Doug McRae

Hi Ontbirders,

The Piping Plovers that were at Sauble Beach seem to of started
migrating south. Our last sighting of them was on Saturday, July 28th,
2007, when the adult male and one juvenile were spotted.

Hope they'll return next year!

It has been a long time since I reported, what with a relative dearth of =
birds along the Whitby waterfront and visiting my wife in long-term =
care facility in Uxbridge. I DO HOPE OTHERS WILL STEP FORWARD FOR =
REPORTING, PARTICULARLY WHEN THE MIGRATORY RAPTOR SEASON COMMENCES--LATE =
AUGUST.
I am happy to report that CLOCA has refurbished the floors of the =
platforms overlooking Cranberry. Also, more water in the wetland has =
brought in waterfowl, and a diedown of cattails has made sighting =
better.
I am concentrating on photographing flowering plants, and will have =
several "albums" for viewing by you.

Now then--some of the birds for Monday am, July 30, sighted by Gunner =
Bessel, Neil Macdougall and I : Red-eyed vireo, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, =
Great Crested Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, Baltimore Oriole, Yellow =
Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and in or over the =
wetland--several Great Blue Herons, 1 GREAT EGRET, 2 Black-crowned Night =
Herons, VIRGINIA RAIL, Kingfisher.

 :Hi Birders I am posting this report for Tom Hayman.
 Wonder if you could put this report on Ontbirds for me.=20
: - At=20
about 7pm this evening - July 30th - we noted a sandhill crane flying =
south=20
low overhead as we sat on the lawn of our lakefront cottage just north =
of=20
Grand Bend. It was an adult bird. Although they have been reported in =
the=20
area before, this is the first time that we have spotted one from the=20
cottage, for our cottage yard list which now stands at something over =
230. =20
( Among birds included on this list are western and Clarke's =
grebe).Thought=20
it might be interesting to some birders.
