Hi Ontbirders: With the beautiful weather yesterday, My wife and I went hiking in the Gatineau Park just north of Ottawa. There is a lovely trail (Lusk Lake Trail) in the north end of the park near Lac Phillipe where you rarely meet anyone. On the trail were several large mixed groups of passerines with five or six species of warblers, three vireos, nuthatches (mostly red-breasted) and chickadees. Among one of the goups, I heard a definite Yellow-throated Vireo singing. I was able to track him down in the woods and had good views. This species is rare in the Ottawa area, but is known to breed in the Gatineau Park. Also on the trail, were three species of woodpecker (Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Hairy and Downy) and a Broad-winged Hawk circling overhead. At Lusk Lake (the end of the trail) a single Common Loon was in evidence. There are also Bald Eagles in the area, but I did not see any. Good birding Peter Hall Directions: From Ottawa/Gatineau take Highways 5 and 105 north to Wakefield. Past the Wakefield turnoff, turn west on the Ste. Cecile de Masham Road (Hwy 368). Past the village, take the entrance road south into Gatineau Park. Follow past the park entrance ($9.80 per car during the summer season). Follow to the end and park near Lac Phillipe. On foot, follow the road into Taylor Lake. Look for the entrance to the Lusk Lake Trail on the left, about a half kilometre down the Taylor Lake Road. And a slightly later report - at 10:30 this morning (July 30) it was about 50 m north of Lookout #3, and at 11:45 it was right at Lookout #2, feeding at the dead fish nearby. At Owen Point there were 3 Semipalmated Plovers and 1 Ruddy Turnstone, as well as a Bonaparte's Gull in breeding plumage. It was feeding on the natural (south) beach between viewing areas 2 and 3. Very few other shorebirds were present: Killdeer 4, Spotted S/p 4, Lesser Yellowlegs 1u, 1j, 1 ad Pectoral. There was also a female Long-tailed Duck in close to shore off from the causeway dividing High Bluff from Pines campground. At Owen Pt. there were a number of Yellow warblers which might be migrants, as well as a Northern Waterthrush.
