Hello,

My wife, Helen, and I did a tour of three eastern Ontario sewer lagoons today,
May 28th: Alfred, St. Isadore and Winchester. Alfred was by far the most
productive, it was our first stop, giving us our highlight of the day a
breeding plumaged female Red necked Phalarope, as well as six Wilson's
Phalarope, a Short billed Dowitcher and many Semipalmated Sandpipers and
Dunlins. St Isadore gave us our only Black bellied Plover and Least Sandpiper
of the day. Winchester was very quiet, most of the cells were full of water but
it still produced a small by comparison clutch of peeps and Dunlins, three
Wilson's Phalaropes and three Pectoral Sandpipers. The complete list follows -
for where the bird was seen the number of the lagoon is listed next to the name
and where there is no number the bird was seen in the general area.

I searched for the prothonotary yesterday evening and this morning in
the spot mentioned below with no luck. I did not check on the west side
of Island Park, where there are also woodlots. I did not see or hear the
indigo bunting either, so it doesn't look promising--these birds may
well have moved on. But as this area is so close to work (and indeed I
bird it often) I will check it again at lunch if meetings, etc. allow. I
will of course report any interesting sightings.

A male prothonotary warbler was discovered by its song and then viewed
for 7-8 minutes in a small wooded area at the southeast corner of the
intersection of Island Park Drive and the Western Parkway, Ottawa, at
noon, Monday, May 28. More specifically, the bird was in the low
thickets immediately behind the gardens of homes on the north side of
Clearview Avenue. It gradually moved further north into the low canopy,
ceased singing, and was neither seen nor heard again over the next 20
minutes. An indigo bunting in the same area was more obliging over this
period, singing continually from a visible, higher perch.

Directions: From hwy 417 (The Queensway) follow Island Park Drive north
approx 2km to Clearview (last street before the Parkway and Ottawa
River). Turn right onto Clearview one short block, then left onto
Patricia for parking and entrance to the wooded area's trail.

I found the Prothonotary today at around 12:40 in the exact location
that Blyth described, namely just north of Clearview between Patricia
and Island Park. It was singing constantly--a classic prothonotary song.
After some tense moments I finally managed to actually see it
(vegetation is dense here) and observed it till around 1 PM, at which
time I reluctantly left to attend a meeting, having had superb views. It
was sometimes fairly low in the woodlot, sometimes quite high in trees
in one of the backyards on Clearview (what a bird to add to your yard
list in Ottawa!). I observed it eat small caterpillars.

Directions (from Blyth): From hwy 417 (The Queensway) follow Island Park
Drive north approx 2km to Clearview (last street before the Parkway and
Ottawa River). Turn right onto Clearview one short block, then left
onto Patricia for parking and entrance to the wooded area's trail.
>From me: There is kind of a loop trail in this small woodlot--the bird
was west of the westernmost part of the loop so I had to bushwhack.
Beware of poison ivy here!

  Hi all,
Please note that this FT is on Saturday June 16 - not 17 as printed
on the yellow 2007 FT list and noted on the OFO website (where I thought it
had been changed some time ago).
Blake Mann (Wallaceburg) is helping to lead the trip and we are
planning to visit both Pelee and Rondeau areas after birding the early part
of the day in the St.Clair NWA area.
