The KIRTLAND'S WARBLER was found late yesterday afternoon in the White Pine / West Beach area and was viewed into the evening hours. There is a report that it has been seen at Northwest Beach this morning.
At the TIP early this morning there were several good fly bys. These included King Eider, Dickcissel, Little Gull, and Purple Sandpiper. Grasshopper Sparrow was seen on the West Side Trail. In the Tilden's / Shuster area was Golden-winged, Blackpoll, Northern Parula, and Bay-breasted Warbler. Other birds seen by Hike Participants included Cooper's Hawk, Scarlet Tanager, Wood Thrush, Great-crested Flycatcher, and many Indigo Buntings. American Bittern was seen at the Marsh Boardwalk. Yellow-billed Cuckoo was at Blue Heron Picnic Area. At the Hillman Marsh Shorebird Cell last night was Black-bellied, Semipalmated, and American Golden Plovers. Also many Dunlin, Short-billed Dowitcher, and both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs. Bobolinks can be seen from the path on the way out. It was quite tame. Single tame Brant or small groups of them have become a fairly familiar occurrence in park-like areas along the Ottawa river in fall, but to my knowledge this is much more unusual in spring. By the way, there was a large flock of what also appeared to be brant flying north-west over the Ottawa River. There were at least 200 birds. Unfortunately they were too distant for me to want to stake my life on the id. It was found between Hunting Stake 14 and 15 at the NW end of the pond. It is in breeding plummage. In addition to the Black Tern, 14 warbler species were seen at Hullett last week: Nashville Yellow Yellow-rumped Black-throated Green Blackburnian Pine Black-and-White Cape May Palm American Redstart Bay-breasted Blue-winged Ovenbird Yellowthroat Many warblers were seen on our Interpretive Trail just outside the office.
