Bill Rapley and I conducted our first birding trip to the Bruce Peninsula this
past weekend. Our primary focus was nesting birds. The following species were
found nesting: osprey (2 nests), bald eagle, broad-winged hawk, wood duck,
Canada Goose (4 nests), raven (2 nests--both with large young ready to fledge),
a likely red-tailed nest (we'll confirm this in two weeks), eastern phoebe
(nest with 1 egg), numerous crow nests (these seem to be more plentiful this
year), and, of course, a multitude of tree swallow nests. We also found two
groups of Brewer's blackbirds that appear to be mating and displaying
territorial behaviour. Also on territory were kestrel, eastern bluebird, and
sandhill cranes. A trip to a reported merlin nest on Lake Huron was
disappointing; although the nest was located, no birds were present.

Spring migration appears to be underway, although birds were fairly scarce.
Only blue jays appeared to moving through in good numbers. Other spring
migrants included palm warbler, Cape May Warbler, yellow-rumped warbler,
rose-breasted grosbeak, mourning warbler, savannah sparrow, white-crowned
sparrow, white-throated sparrow, belted kingfisher, blue-winged teal, Caspian
Tern, and golden eagle. Also resident were rose-breasted nuthatch,
yellow-bellied sapsucker, northern harrier, cooper's hawk, and merlin. In
total, 56 species were noted during our trip.

Fine weather again. Winds have died down to a pleasant breeze but are still
from the east and southeast..

At the tip this morning, a large mass of Red-breasted Mergansers, with many
gulls, including Bonaparte's and Ring-billed were feeding off the tip.
Flying by were several White-winged Scoter, a few Long-tailed Ducks, a pair
of Common Merganser and even a Harlequin Duck.

A good flood of birds have entered the Park. Large groups of sparrows have
been reported. These include mainly White-throated, White-crowned,
Chipping, Field, with a few Lincoln's being reported. There was also a
Grasshopper Sparrow at the tip. The Henslow's Sparrow reported for the last
few days was refound today at the same location, along the footpath along
the West Beach, a few hundred metres north of the tram tip loop. Remember
this is an endangered species here so enjoy the bird from the path only.

Many Orchard and Baltimore Orioles, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Wood,
Hermit and Swainson's Thrushes, and Veery were reported.

On the warbler front, Blue-winged Warbler (on Post Woods trail), Ovenbird,
Nashville, Yellow-rump, Black-throated Green, Black-throated Blue, Cape
May, and Northern Waterthrush have been reported to now.

A White-eyed Vireo was found south of the Visitor Centre on the Woodland
Nature Trail,

Several people found the female Summer Tanager at the north-east side of
Tilden's again today.

Outside the park, a 1st summer Little Gull, White-rumped Sandpiper, and a
Short-billed Dowitcher were reported from the shorebird habitat at Hillman
Marsh.

I know that this is something a number of birders have suggested in the past
and wanted to be sure you are aware of it. Please note that I am NOT the
contact for information on the pass. I am only passing on the information

http://www.pbase.com/mcindan/image/78401151

I believe it is a Palm Warbler, but I am unsure - can someone confirm?

Directions: From Ottawa travel west bound on Hwy. 417 to the March
Rd./Eagleson Road and exit right onto March Rd. Follow to Dunrobin Road and
turn right continuing northwest through Woodlawn. At the hill turn right
onto Constance Bay Rd following it for approx. 1.5 km. Turn left on Allbirch
Road and drive 1.3 km to the "T" intersection. Turn left on Bishop Davis
Drive and then right on Bayview Drive. Follow Bayview Drive to Ritchie St.
Turn right and go a short distance to Whistler Rd. Turn left and drive .3 km
and watch for a gate on the right. The trail through the burn area is

opposite the gate.
