THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - 5:45 pm, SUNDAY MAY 6, 2007

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Persistent north winds continued to keep things slow this week, however a good
variety of birds was noted.

On the 4th, a probable 1st May record for Ottawa of Cackling Goose was
found among the multiple 1000's of Canada Geese that continue to roost in
the large quarry pond along Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. in the evenings. A
good variety of ducks can also still be found here, among them a Redhead on
the 29th. Good numbers of waterfowl were also at the Winchester and Embrun
sewage lagoons this weekend, including Gadwall, American Wigeon,
Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Ring-necked Duck and
Lesser Scaup. A pair of Surf Scoters and 7 Long-tailed Ducks were in Shirley's
Bay on the 27th and 9 Red-necked Grebes were here on May 4th.

A pair of Green Herons dropped in at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden pond on the
2nd, and a Black-crowned Night-Heron was at Mud Lake, Britannia on the 5th.
A migrating Broad-winged Hawk flew over downtown Ottawa on the 1st, and 2
(likely a breeding pair) were seen in Gatineau Park on the 6th. Merlins continue
to be noted in suburban neighbourhoods, particularly Carlingwood and the
Pinecrest Cemetery, and the downtown pair of Peregrine Falcons has at least 2
eggs in their nest. The 1st reports of Common Moorhen came from the
Richmond Conservation Area on Eagleson Rd. on the 1st and the Sabourin
marsh in Hull, Quebec on the 6th, and single American Coots were in the
Moodie Dr. pond and the Winchester sewage lagoons this past week. Five
Sandhill Cranes appeared in a cornfield along Vances Side Rd. near Dunrobin
on the 29th.

The excellent habitat at the Winchester sewage lagoons looks very attractive
for shorebirds, and 7 species were here on the 5th including 1 Greater and
approx. 40 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4 Least, 1 Spotted, and 1 Pectoral Sandpiper, and
4 Wilson's Phalaropes. Both Yellowlegs and 3 Wilson's Phalaropes were at the
Embrun lagoons the same day.

The 1st Chimney Swift of the season was reported from downtown Ottawa on
the 5th, several Blue-headed Vireos were singing in Gatineau Park on the 6th,
the 1st Warbling Vireo report came from the Britannia Conservation Area on
the 5th, and the Cliff Swallow colony breeding under the Champlain bridge is
thriving. There were 3 separate sightings of Northern Mockingbirds this week - 1
on restricted property at Fallowfield & Cedarview Rds. from April 24 to 26, 1
behind the Barbara Ann Scott Arena near Baseline Rd. and Woodroffe Ave. on
May 1st, and another at the SW corner of the Britannia Water Purification Plant
on the 5th and 6th. Brown Thrashers are now back on territory in several
locations, and 9 species of warblers have been reported to date with the most
recent arrivals being Northern Parula, Black-throated Green, Black-and-white,
and Northern Waterthrush. The only sparrow report of note was a
late-for-Ottawa Fox Sparrow in a backyard near Billings Bridge on April 29th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
