Maureen Smith and I birded Carden very early this morning (May 5) and heard the Yellow Rail at the NW corner of the Sedge Wren Marsh on Wylie Rd. American Bitterns were calling, but no wrens (marsh or sedge). The Loggerhead Shrikes were behind Bluebird box 10 on Wylie Rd. and their were many Upland Sandpipers (over 20 seen). There was a Grasshopper Sparrow north (1 km?) of the marsh. Eastern Kingbirds have arrived in good numbers. Very few warblers, but did find one nice male Blackburnian. Soras were found on Prospect Rd.
directions: Wylie Rd: From Kirkfield go north on Co. Rd. 6, past the Lift Lock then east on McNamee and immediately go north on Wylie Rd. Prospect Rd: From Kirkfield go west on Co. Rd. 48. Prospect is the 2nd concession road to the south. There are 2 marshes (Sora in both), both north of Eldon Station Rd. Birders arriving at the Visitor Centre were serenaded by a persistent Pine Warbler and a Warbling Vireo. The feeders there were the best place to spot a recently arrived a Baltimore Oriole and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Warbler highlights included a main course of Cerulean Warbler (a male since May 3 at the Pony Barn and pond) and Northern Parula (2 on South Point Trail), with a side order of Cape Mays, Blackburnians and Black-throated Blues, etc. South Point Trail was a fair hotspot, with sightings of assorted warblers as well as Yellow-throated and White-eyed Vireo (2). In addition to the Cerulean, the Pony Barn and pond area attracted a good variety of warblers, not to mention several species of telephoto lenses. Hermit Thrushes are still being seen on Tulip Tree Trail, and we are now hearing the occasional Wood Thrush adding its voice to the springtime chorus. The White-throated Sparrow surge has abated somewhat and they have now been joined by good numbers of White-crowned Sparrows. There are also non-passerines that deserve mention. While the peak of the duck migration is long past, the movement of Red-breasted Mergansers continues to be impressive. Many of the woodland sloughs will host Wood Ducks right through the nesting season. Long-tailed Ducks are rather unusual here, and the sighting of one off the South Point Trail is of interest. Our best raptor of the spring to date was a Peregrine Falcon which we discovered perching near the Visitor Centre on April 22 (photos). The Bald Eagle pair is once again nesting within view from the Marsh Trail. Ospreys have also been seen nearby, on May 3. A Whip-poor-will was heard calling on April 29 and 30. Forsters Terns were observed May 3 from the Marsh Trail. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I will lead a guided bird hike twice daily May 5 21 (fee $5), as follows: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 7:30 am & 1 p.m.; Tuesday & Thursday 7:30 a.m. & 7 p.m. Friday 7:30 am All of the hikes listed above meet at the Visitor Centre. A second hike on Friday at 1 p.m. will meet at the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons. The Friends of Rondeau will provide a birders brunch for a small donation (coffee, tea, bagels, soups & treats) daily from 7 11 a.m. Saturday May 12 at 7 p.m. evening presentation of spring migration at Rondeau An Evening in the Forest with LaForest (contact Visitor Centre for tickets) Steve LaForest Friends of Rondeau Bird Guide c/o Rondeau Visitor Centre (519) 674-1768 _________________________________________________________________ Dont waste time standing in linetry shopping online.
