A cool north wind and sunny skies welcomed early morning April 30 birders to
Thickson Woods in southwest Whitby. Up to 9am the following were seen-- male
and female Pileated Woodpeckers, 1 Black-and-White Warbler, 2 Pine Warblers,
several Palm Warblers, 1 Nashville Warbler, 1 Black-throated Green Warbler,
many Yellow-rumped Warblers, 1 Eastern Phoebe, several hermit Thrushes, several
Winter Wrens.
A Blue Jay is busily building a nest 1/2 way up a Yellow Birch, to the
immediate west of the sightings book.

A Whip-poor-will was seen in the late afternoon of Apr.29. A Green Heron and 2
Virginia Rails were seen at Cranberry Marsh on Apr.29.

The Toronto Star of Apr.30 has an article (with photo) on the Bonaparte's Gulls
with a few accompanying "little gulls" (presumably Little Gulls!!) seen by a
number of people along the Lake Ontario shoreline to the east of Second Marsh.

For Thickson Woods--exit 401 at Thickson Rd. in east Whitby--south towards the
lakefront, turning east onto the deadend roadway along the north side of the
pine woods.
For Cranberry Marsh--driving either direction along Victoria St. in southwest
Whitby, turning south onto Hall's Rd. (1 block east of Lakeridge Rd.)--south to
either the north or south pathway parking areas.

The Bank swallows have returned to their traditional earth embankment
nest site on Artesian Industrial Parkway at the Ninth Line to the north of
Bradford. Some Rough wings were also present. How long this site will remain
intact is anyone's guess, but there's quite a bit of building planned for the
area. I also had Pine Warblers at Scanlon Creek Conservation Area on Sun. I was
in Orangeville on Sat. and had a Solitary Sandpiper at a rain catchment pond.
It was flying at one point with a Common Grackle in hot pursuit. I've also seen
grackles chasing Spotted Sandpipers. Is this predatory behaviour or territorial?
The Bank Swallow colony is north of Bradford on Hwy. 11. Turn right
onto the Ninth Line and then turn right again on Artesian Industrial Parkway.
The colony is on your right.
