Hello Folks,

The long awaited BALTIMORE ORIOLE or is it the NORTHERN ORIOLE has
arrived at 0815 hours this morning.

The Baltimore Orioles of major baseball adopted their name (and their
team colors) from this handsome bird dressed in flaming orange and
black. The bird, in turn, has received its name in honor of George
Calvert, Lord Baltimore, a 17th-century nobleman whose coat of arms
bore the same striking colors.

In the mid- 1980's ornithologists concluded that the Baltimore oriole,
a bird commonly found east of the Rockies, and its western
counterpart, the Bullock's oriole, are actually one species, and
united them under a new name: THE NORTHERN ORIOLE.

Let's welcome them and give them a taste of our Canadian hospitality
of slices of oranges and sugar water in some of those special
Humdinger Hummingbirdfeeders which they love.

If we are good to them they will stay around for the summer and as
soon as the leaves are on the trees they will weave hanging nests,
suspended pouch-fashion from the very tips of branches. And when the
leaves are off the trees in the fall these gently swaying fiber
baskets are easily seen, usually high up, and for us bird watchers
such lovely confirmation of the NORTHERN ORIOLE'S nesting success is
as satisfying as a home run.

Enjoy!

  April 30, 2007

  To all birders:

An immature Clay coloured sparrow showed up at my feeder over the
weekend and has appeared every day since Sat. Apr. 29th. Excellent
photo opportunity since it is close to the house.

To get to my home take Hwy #401 to Hwy #19 and continue south on Hwy
#19 through Tillsonburg, Eden and Stratfordville to Regional Road
#45. At Regional Road #45 turn left, heading east approximately 5
kilometers to Regional Road #55. At Regional Rd. #55 turn right,
heading south approximately 5 kilometers to Lakeshore Rd. Approaching
Lakeshore Rd. you'll begin to see windmills. Turn left, heading east
on Lakeshore Rd. approximately 2 kilometers to North Road. My house
is a brown board and batton style home on the northwest corner of
North Road and Lakeshore Rd. The fire number has been spray painted
out by vandels, but should read #171. Simply drive up the circular
driveway and park your car next to the feeder.

  Enjoy!

Hello Ontbirders:
A few interesting birds back in the Ottawa area. In the Billings Bridge area off of Bank Street, there was a Fox Sparrow on Sunday, April 27, in my backyard at 24 Wendover Avenue. It was seen feeding on the ground several times during the day. On the Rideau River just west of Bank Street a male Wood Duck was in full breeding plumage. On the same day in the afternoon, there was a Pine Warbler singing and fully visible from some of the large pine trees in the Brittania Woods, Over Mud Lake at the Brittania Woods, an Osprey was circling overhead with a fish grasped in its talons. Good Birding Peter Hall Directions. To Billings Bridge, head south on Bank street from downtown Ottawa. Wendover Avenue is two blocks east of Bank Street just before you reach Billings Bridge. The Wood Duck can be seen from Billings Bridge where it crosses the Rideau River. To reach Brittania woods, head west from downtown Ottawa on Carling Avenue. Just past Lincoln Fields shopping Centre, turn right on Pilon Street. Follow it north until it turns left and hits Brittania Avenue. Turn right on Brittania until it dead ends at the Brittania Yacht Club. Turn right and you can park at the woods near the trail entrance.

A Leucistic White-throated Sparrow has been hanging around all morning and
still present at 1:14 pm at the end of Sandale Rd in Stouffville, in the
wooded area on the east side at the dead-end. It is bright white all over
the underside, even the blackish outline of the white throat is missing, and
also white on its back and rump, such that it resembles a snow bunting. Not
sure if this is particularly uncommon, but it's a pretty bird.

Directions: Stouffville rd, east of Hwy 48 to first set of lights, turn left
onto Sandale at the Tim Hortons, go north about 400 meters to the dead end.

Jack Walker
