Highlights of reports received April 12 through April 19 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include EURASIAN WIGEON and BOS April count
reports.
April 17 in the Genesee County Town of Alexander, a EURASIAN WIGEON
was reported at Buckenmeyer Swamp on Old Creek Road, between Batavia
and Alexander. Also at this location, several AMERICAN WIGEONS, GREAT
EGRET, YELLOW-R. WARBLER and the first report of PALM WARBLER. A BALD
EAGLE nest has been found in Alexander, accounting for the recent
reports of EAGLES.
The BOS April Count was conducted on the 15th. A section of
northwest Niagara County reported 80 species, highlighted by 16 duck
species, GLAUCOUS GULL in the fields at Dickersonville and
Youngstown-Wilson Roads in Porter, 5 CASPIAN TERNS, 5 GREAT HORNED
OWLS including two nests with 3 young each, first report of BARN
SWALLOW, VESPER SPARROW, 4 FOX SPARROWS, 237 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, over
7000 RED-W. BLACKBIRDS, 135 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, over 1000 COMMON
GRACKLES and a PURPLE FINCH.
The section of Grand Island and Goat Island logged a diverse range
of 75 species - 11 WILD TURKEYS, 9 GREAT EGRETS, PEREGRINE FALCON,
VIRGINIA RAIL, 4 LITTLE GULLS, COMMON TERN, EASTERN SCREECH-OWL, 3
GREAT HORNED OWLS, 8 RED-
BELLIED WDPKRS., 3 YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKERS, 2 CAROLINA WRENS, 6 WINTER
WRENS, 3 AMERICAN PIPITS, 7 FOX SPARROWS and numbers of WHITE-THR.
SPARROWS and WHITE-CR. SPARROWS.
And a count along the roads of the Town of Bennington in northwest
Wyoming County reported 48 species, highlighted by COMMON LOON on the
Akron Reservoir, 9 AMERICAN KESTRELS, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK,
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and 33 WILSON'S SNIPE.
April 14 at Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, another good count of
FOX SPARROWS - at least ten in the preserve, plus COMMON LOON at the
Visitors Center, HORNED GREBE, WOOD DUCK, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, RUDDY
DUCK, YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER, HERMIT THRUSH, BROWN THRASHER, YELLOW-R.
WARBLER and SWAMP SPARROW.
From the Town of Lancaster on April 12, 3 unexpected COMMON TERNS,
migrating westward over Genesee and Harris Hill Roads.
Other reports this week - on the Langford Ponds on Route 75 in North
Collins, 10 waterbirds including COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE and
CANVASBACK. Over the Buffalo Psyc Center, a migrant OSPREY. At Squaw
Island in Buffalo, over 1000 BONAPARTE'S GULLS. In the Niagara County
Town of Cambria, 2 PILEATED WOODPECKERS near Shawnee Road. The
property owner noted this was the first and only sighting of PILEATED
WOODPECKER on the land in 30 years. And, from Amherst, on Saratoga
Blvd. in Snyder, EASTERN TOWHEE, FOX SPARROW and WHITE-THR. SPARROW.
