It stuck around for some photos before flying off over the cedars. There has been an increase in male cardinals, especially today with many chasing each other through the white spruce. I noticed more blue jays and robins aswell as the goldfinch population seems to be booming since we have had nyger feeders out for them. This is the third accipiter i've seen in two days, the other two coopers hawks were in residential parts of Peterborough. In the "Owl Woods" we located 6 Long-eared Owls quietly roosting in the White Cedar grove and after an extensive search 1 Northern Saw-whet Owl was found at the south east corner of the field between the cedars and the Jack Pine plantation. At the entrance into the woods a Northern Shrike was sighted. No luck with Snowy Owls at the east end of the island and there were numerous Rough-legged, Red-tailed, and 4 Northern Harrier. Along the south side of the island there was an impressive concentration of waterfowl packed tight in the few open leads of water. Highlights included 26 Tundra Swan, 265+ Redhead, 27 Greater Scaup, 9 Lesser Scaup and 26 Gadwall. We did a quick check at the DuPont Plant lagoon just west of Kingston and the lagoon was mainly full of Mallards 1000+, Am. Black Duck 125+, Gadwall 150+, and 9 American Coot. On Feb.17th birded east of Ottawa and along the St. Lawrence from Cornwall to Prescott. The Ste.Rose area had a good variety of birds including 5 Gray Partridge along Concession 17 near house # 2653, 71 Horned Lark, 238 Lapland Longspur and 562 Snow Bunting. After some searching we found 1 Snowy Owl. With the recent cold temperatures most of the St. Lawrence River was frozen except around the power dam and a total of 17 Hooded Mergansers were found as well as 2 ad. Bald Eagle. good birding Bruce Directions: Ste.Rose area: Take highway 417 east from Ottawa past Casselman to exit 58 (exit for Cornwall). Turn left up County Road 8, then take the first right onto Conc. 20. The Ste-Rose Road is the first left and follow north to Con.17. Directions: Amherst Island: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit 593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end (Millhaven). Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is $6.00 Canadian round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. The East End K.F.N. property is at the easternmost part of the island on the east side of the Lower Forty Foot Road. To reach the Owl Woods, turn left (east) at the four-way stop sign by the general store and drive 3.4 km along Front Rd. to the (seasonal) Marshall Forty-Foot Rd. Due to snow drifting the road is closed and you must walk in from either the south side or north side. Marshall Forty-Foot Rd. is across the road from house #2320. Drive along Marshall Rd. to the mid-way point, where there is an "S" in the road (1.2 km, look for the K.F.N. kiosk which had owl observing ethics). Park in the gravel lane or off the road edge.
