Highlights of reports received February 1 through February 8 from the Niagara Frontier Region include VARIED THRUSH, EASTERN TOWHEE and VIRGINIA RAIL.

February 1 through at least the 7th, a very rare vagrant from the Pacific Northwest, a female VARIED THRUSH, on private property in the Niagara County Town of Cambria. The thrush has been feeding on crabapples and berries.

In a week of extreme cold and lake effect snow, an EASTERN TOWHEE with several WHITE-THR. SPARROWS at a feeder on Fix Road on Grand Island. In Clarence, an EASTERN BLUEBIRD at a feeder for several weeks. From a Silver Creek yard, CAROLINA WREN, HAIRY WOODPECKER, and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD, plus a COOPER'S HAWK. And hearty AMERICAN ROBINS at several locations.

January 31, prior to the massive snowfall, seemingly focused on the Town of Aurora, a VIRGINIA RAIL was found at Sinking Ponds, along the main trail past the beaver dam. Sinking Ponds is at the north end of Pine Avenue, outside the Village of East Aurora.

February 1, at Buckhorn Island State Park, two PEREGRINE FALCONS on and about the North Grand Island Bridge. In the Cattaraugus County Town of Dayton, February 3, a PEREGRINE FALCON along with 3 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and 2 RED-TAILED HAWKS. And, BALD EAGLES this week - flying low over Salt and Cedar Roads in Clarence, another BALD EAGLE over the Great Baehre Swamp in Amherst, and a pair of adults on a Niagara River ice floe off Beaver Island State Park.
