A female Baltimore Oriole has been at a Yarmouth Centre feeder daily since
December 16 [except for 2 days late in December]. The owners of the
property, Al and Eva Hurst, have given me the OK to post this to Ontbirds
and invite birders to see this bird.
The bird is most predictable in the morning and usually arrives between
0830 and 0900 although this morning [Jan 11], when we went to see it, it
did not arrive until 0930. It usually comes in with House Sparrows and is
seen throughout the morning and early afternoon. It is very irregular
later in the afternoon.
This bird feeds on seeds [including sunflower] on the ground, at feeders
and occasionally on a suet cake nailed to a very large tree. It also comes
to the bird bath to drink. This bird is not intimidated by the hordes of
House Sparrows or other species so shows itself well and for long
periods. Other species present include starling, House Finch, Brown-headed
Cowbird, Mourning Dove, Downy Woodpecker, Blue Jay and Gray Squirrel.
Directions:
Yarmouth Centre is located at the intersection of Talbot Line / Hwy # 3 and
Yarmouth Centre Line, just east of St. Thomas in Elgin County. The
address of the property is # 44415 Talbot Line and the house is on the
southeast corner of this intersection. There is a sign on the east side of
the driveway saying GAMMONS RV and Appliance Repairs. You can drive in
this driveway about 20 metres so that you can see the feeders behind the
house [south side of house]. The driveway is a loop driveway into the
owners business so just park to one side of the right side of the loop and
watch out the car windows at the feeders which are only about 10 metres
from the driveway. Once you've finished watching you can drive around the
loop and back out to the highway.
