The 27th annual St. Clair National Wildlife Area CBC took place on January 1, 2007. Due to the good viewing conditions and extremely mild weather prior to the count, there were tremendous numbers of waterbirds of 35 species, including 26 species of waterfowl.

Ninety-one species, equaling our previous high established in 2004, were recorded by the 25 observers. This is well above our average of 75 species over the previous decade and 65 species since the first count in 1981. Total birds for the day were 142401, with 95727 of those being waterfowl. This total is second only to the total of 185868 birds in 2000 which included an incredible 159860 American Crows. With the current winter being so mild and the continuing effort by the municipality to move the crows from their traditional roost, the number of crows seen in the count circle in 2007 was a paltry 3432.

We added three species to the count this year: Black-crowned Night-Heron (1), Cackling Goose (3) and Black Scoter (6) bringing the cumulative total for this count to 134 species.

New high counts were established for 25 species (previous highs are in parentheses) not including the three new species mentioned above:
Double-crested Cormorant –10 (7)
Great Blue Heron –44 (23)
Tundra Swan –6596 (5430)
Wood Duck –10 (9)
Gadwall –185 (17)
American Wigeon –30 (9)
American Black Duck –5370 (5340)
Mallard –35800 (26528)
Green-winged Teal –131 (7)
Canvasback –25800 (19215)
Redhead –15200 (2561)
Ring-necked Duck –67 (8)
Bald Eagle –7 (5)
Bonaparte’s Gull –169 (166)
Ring-billed Gull –5129 (1550)
Rock Pigeon –1058 (977)
Belted Kingfisher –6 (2)
Red-bellied Woodpecker –23 (15)
Carolina Wren –11 (6)
Golden-crowned Kinglet –9 (7)
American Robin –13 (8)
European Starling –27269 (12599)
American Pipit –13 (3)
Common Yellow-throat –4 (3)
American Goldfinch –483 (322)

Tied high numbers occurred for three species:
Barn Owl –1 (2nd record)
Short-eared Owl –1 (5th record)
Hermit Thrush –1 (4th record)
