Near the end of the Christmas bird count in Toronto sector 15, an adult male
Harlequin duck was found close to a group of about 200 gulls on the rocks off
the foot of Wineva Ave, about half way between Woodbine and Victoria Park.

>From the west the Gardiner Expressway becomes Lakeshore, which ends by curving
>into Woodbine. Turn right on Queen at the first lights. Turn right on
>Wineva, at the 4th lights; go to the end, look for a place to park, walk to
>the boardwalk and look along the water's edge.
>From the east, turn left off Kingston Rd on Fallingbrook. At the end go right
>on Queen for about a kilometer - turn left at the bottom of the hill on Glen
>Manor - go to the end, park, and walk to the boardwalk. Good luck.

Betsy, Vicki Rothman, and I participated in the Buffalo CBC today. Our area
consisted of the Niagara River around the falls, from the Ontario side. We
looked hard for the Slaty-backed Gull as did several other folks without any
luck. Gull numbers were up from what were reported during the week.
However, white-winged gulls were still in paltry numbers. Lesser
Black-backed Gulls have been relatively scarce this fall and today we only
had three.

A few highlights of our day:
Our first CBC Ruby-crowned Kinglet at the pulloff below the control gates.
1 adult Peregrine Falcon finishing up his pigeon dinner on the power station
below the falls
34 Tundra Swans above the control gates
3 Pintails - one above the control gates; 2 in the rocks below the barge
1 American Coot at Dufferin Islands
3 Purple Sandpipers just above the barge (thanks to Peter Yoerg for the
phone call on these!)
1460 Bonaparte's Gulls
8070 Herring Gulls
2 Iceland gulls
3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
1 Tufted Titmouse - Thomas Street
1 Carolina Wren - Thomas Street

Good birding!
Willie
