Jean Iron of Toronto, Ontario has posted three photos of the third-basic
plumaged Slaty-backed Gull at Niagara Falls, Ontario on the Niagara River,
taken Saturday. In addition Paul Hurtado, currently of Ithaca, NY. has
posted four photos of the bird, taken shortly after the Cayuga Bird Club
discovered it on Saturday.

The Slaty-backed was seen again today by many in several different spots
above the falls (three times briefly on the breakwall below the control
gates), although it did not stay in one place for very long. Yesterday, it
was not seen feeding at all. Today, it was. Check everywhere above the
falls and if that fails, check below the falls. If all else fails, check
the power plants. The first Slaty-backed Gull in 1992 was seen many times
above the falls but the last sighting was at the power plants, about a month
after Rod Planck of Michigan discovered it in the Niagara Falls, Ontario
landfill.

The adult-like and immature Kittiwakes were seen below the falls today. The
adult California Gull was seen from Adam Beck. Two Purple Sandpipers were
seen above the stranded barge (above the falls). I did not hear any reports
of the Razorbill though most people were not looking in the early morning
which seems to be the best time to find it. Little Gulls were again seen
below the falls (and probably elsewhere). There are Icelands and Thayer's
around but I have not heard of any Glaucous Gull sightings lately.

There were a few Rough-winged Swallows seen yesterday but I did not hear of
any today.

Good birding!
Willie

Hi all. While looking for the Goldeneye's this aft. I was able to spot a
1st year King Eider and show the bird to at least half a dozen other
onlookers. The Barrow's was there but difficult to spot at times. I was
pretty sure that I had the Common x Barrow's Goldeneye hybrid at one point
too.

The Black Scoter numbers here are better than I've seen anywhere before in
Ontario. Must have been at least half a dozen males and dozens of
females!!!

This all happened around 4pm.

Directions:

View from end of Gray's Rd. Gray's Rd. can be reached from the QEW @ Stoney
Creek, just s.e. of Hamilton, Ontario.
