THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 4:30 pm, MONDAY NOVEMBER 13, 2006

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

A significant movement of northern birds dominated the local scene
this week.

On Nov. 7th, at least 1 Greater White-fronted Goose and 31 mostly
adult Snow Geese were in a field off Brophy Dr. south of Moodie
Dr. On the 8th, 12 Brant arrived to become the now almost
traditional fall "lawn ornaments" at Andrew Haydon and Dick Bell
Parks, 4 were still here on the 13th, and an increase in the
numbers of diving ducks on the Ottawa River continues, including
up to 26 male Black Scoters on the 13th, and 3 male Canvasbacks
off the boat launches along Grandview Rd. since the 12th. An
exciting movement of loons occurred on the 13th, with a total of
178 RED-THROATED LOONS and 123 COMMON LOONS on the Ottawa River
from Shirley's Bay east through to Remic Rapids.

Wild Turkeys were again seen along March Valley Rd. and Kerwin Rd.
on the weekend, a late Double-crested Cormorant was at Deschenes
rapids on the 13th, single adult and immature Bald Eagles were at
Shirley's Bay on the past 2 days, and 2 immature Golden Eagles
were reported in flight from separate locations on the 12th. Two
adult Peregrine Falcons, probably our local breeding pair, have
been seen at the R.H. Coats building at Tunney's Pasture, a record
high count of 74 SANDHILL CRANES were feeding in the fields on the
west side of Milton Rd. northeast of Carlsbad Springs on the 13th,
and a visit to the Embrun sewage lagoons on the 9th produced
approx. 20 very late Bonaparte's Gulls. The 1st seasonal reports
of 2 Iceland Gulls came from the Trail Rd. Landfill environs on
the 9th, along with an immature Thayer's Gull, 3 adult Lesser
Black-backed Gulls and a Glaucous Gull.

Since last weekend, additional reports of both American Three-toed
and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS have come in. A male Three-toed was
seen at Vances Side Rd. near Dunrobin on the 8th, and 2 Black-
backed's were found in the Pinhey Forest off Slack Rd. between
Merivale Rd. and Woodroffe Ave. the same day. Both species were
seen again along the Kerwin Rd. trail northwest of Kanata again on
the 12th and 13th.

Noteworthy passerines included a Northern Shrike at Dolman Ridge
Rd. on the 9th, an extremely late Gray Catbird in a yard on
Quigley Hill Rd. in Cumberland from the 4th to at least the 10th.
Good numbers of Lapland Longspurs have been reported among flocks
of several hundred Snow Buntings in agricultural fields both east
and west of Ottawa since the 7th. A very late Eastern Towhee was
on the Kerwin Rd. trail on the 13th, and a recent flight of
finches included 6 Red Crossbills at Kerwin on the 6th and a dozen
White-winged Crossbills here on the 12th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
