There have been two separate observations of Cackling Geese in the North Bay Birding Area.

The first was a bird on the Verner Sewage Lagoon found on Thursday, September 21 by Angela Martin. It was with a group of Canada Goose. The geese appear to congregate at the lagoons in the afternoon. They are absent in the morning probaly feeding in the open fields.. Goose hunting does occur in the area and according to one of the goose guides there are a couple of Snow Geese in the area as well.

The second bird is just east of Sundridge and was found on Saturday, September 23 by Steve O'Donnell and Kathy and Martin Parker. It was with a flock of Canada Goose. The field area it was is is semi-protected as the owners do not permit hunting and it is close to houses. If you visit this spot please observe from the roadway.

Directions:
Verner Lagoon -- Verner is on Highway 17 between North Bay and Sudbury. At Verner turn south onto Highway 64. After crossing a small river turn left or east onto Ch. Olivier Rd and travel 0.6 km. There is a driveway on the right and the lagoon is at the end of the driveway. The bird was in the southern most of the two ponds.

Sundridge -- located on Highway 11 north of Huntsville. At the north end of Sundridge turn east onto Tower Road and cross the railway tracks. At the stop sign turn left. Follow it eastwards out of Sundridge. Past the Kent Tressess Plant there are open fields on both sides of the road. Checkout the flocks of geese carefully. If you reach the Strong Township landfill site you have gone too far.
